TIM PLAMPER
Born in 1982.
Lives and works in Berlin (Germany).
Tim Plamper is a Berlin-based visual artist born in 1982. Evolving in the field of drawing and internet culture, his artistic work deals with mental states - with the dubious reliability of one's own existence. Claiming to be influenced by the German art historian Aby Warburg, Tim Plamper uses existing images from a variety of sources, periods and aesthetics to serve an open symbolic purpose, where the very composition of the image, complex and enigmatic, exhausts no interpretation, forming what he calls a mental sediment.

A naked female body. A rocky ground. Two circular gaps like abysses... In this visual enigma with a poetic, perhaps or certainly political title, Tim Plamper's entire process of drawing composition is revealed: he fragments, assembles and superimposes images taken from a daily flow of images to produce a symbolic work, where it's a question of unconsciousness, myth and sedimented time.
The proximity between this extended Venus (or perhaps Europe, as evoked by the title of the work, the Phoenician princess of Greek mythology abducted by Zeus in the guise of a bull, giving her name to the Old Continent), and the abyss, this gaping hole that splits and brushes against her, raises questions: precipice towards oblivion or symbol of (re)birth? What does this rain wash away? Today, we imagine a resilient, young Europe, aware of the challenges that lie ahead. But in 100 years' time, Europa nach dem regen will enjoy a different light, a different resonant context, a different layer of time and, therefore, different meanings. As well as being virtuoso in its classical technique (pencil on paper), in its rendering of textures and light, Tim Plamper's work seems timeless.
