To inaugurate this new season, Galerie Bacqueville is pleased to present a group show, featuring a selection of works by artists from the gallery, entitled “Limelights”.
In the early 19th century, theatrical stages were lit by heating lime in a cylinder, a kind of ancestor of the spotlight, which produced an intense white light. Over time, the term “limelight” took on a figurative meaning to evoke the “spotlight” or “center of attention”. The works of the gallery's twelve artists, brought together here in the limelight*, are all about light: light that radiates, light that reveals, light that interacts or light that dialogues poetically with darkness. Fiat Lux.
* A clear reference to Chaplin's film, in which the character returns to the stage lights after having fallen into disuse, in a final, poignant performance.
